As Dubai maintains its position as one of the world’s leading tourist destinations, the importance of vocational training in developing a skilled workforce is becoming increasingly apparent.
In recent years, there has been a major shift in educational choices, with more and more students recognizing the value of vocational learning over traditional technical education. This shift not only benefits the students themselves, but also contributes to the sustainable growth of the thriving tourism industry.
Strong vocational education services will also support a key priority of Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which is to integrate the next generation of Emiratis into the private sector and attract highly skilled talent as long-term residents. Tourism is a dynamic and fast-growing sector that makes an important contribution to economies around the world, promoting cultural exchange, economic development and job creation. I am proud to say that Dubai is firmly on its way to be the most visited international destination, welcoming 2023.1 million international overnight visitors from January to April 4.
As tourism is a key pillar of Dubai’s economy, the government is committed to accelerating the momentum of the entire industry in 2023 and beyond, and therefore recognises the importance of meeting the growing demand for skilled talent in the tourism workforce.
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the industry is expected to create 2032 million new jobs by 1 as the global travel and tourism industry is heading towards a full recovery and is poised to outpace global growth. The potential of the tourism industry, investing in quality vocational education to meet the unique needs of the sector is essential.
Vocational education plays a key role in career development, upskilling and employability. By bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills, vocational training enables students to gain a comprehensive understanding of their chosen field.
Beyond the limitations of the traditional classroom, vocational training provides hands-on experience and prepares students to meet the real demands of future careers. The immersive learning environment and the opportunity for students to work alongside industry professionals instills valuable insights and gives trainees the confidence to excel on their chosen career path.
Students are trained by experienced professionals who bring real-world expertise and insights to the classroom. This hands-on experience ensures that graduates are job-ready from day one, equipped with the necessary skills and competencies required for the tourism industry.
The changing demands of the tourism industry make vocational education even more important. With the growing popularity of experiential travel and the need for personalized service, a professional workforce has become essential.
By focusing on vocational education, Dubai Institute of Tourism is able to cultivate a talent pool that understands the complexities of the hospitality industry, excels at customer service, and appreciates the nuances of event management and culinary arts. These skills help create memorable experiences for visitors and leave a lasting impression on Dubai’s world-leading hospitality industry.
The surge in demand for vocational education in Dubai reflects the awareness of its importance among students and prospective employers. The shift to vocational training stems from the understanding that it improves career prospects and provides practical skills that are highly sought after in the job market.
Institutions such as Dubai Tourism Institute (DCT) help meet these aspirations by offering vocational programs tailored to industry requirements and enable students to compete in a competitive environment.
DCT graduates are exemplary examples of successful vocational education, gaining fulfilling careers and becoming ambassadors for Dubai’s renowned hospitality industry. Their passion, combined with the skills acquired through vocational training, motivates them to excel in their positions and contribute to the continued success of the industry.
All in all, the importance of vocational training for the booming tourism industry is self-evident.
In fact, since the inception of Dubai Institute of Tourism in 2017, I have had the privilege of seeing first-hand the transformative impact vocational education has on individuals and the entire tourism ecosystem. Embracing vocational study provides students with practical skills and expertise that will enable them to excel in their chosen career.
As Dubai continues to shape the future of tourism and remains committed to promoting educational excellence, let’s recognise the power of vocational education in developing a skilled and dynamic workforce, enhancing the city’s reputation as a global hub for business, investment and tourism.
